A trip to South Dakota

A few weeks ago…. we took a trip to South Dakota. But this time we didn’t move our rig, we flew! Yes to Rapid City, South Dakota to do some necessary business. Then we played tourists!

So we first went to see Mount Rushmore at the National Park site. I was excited to use my newly acquired Senior Park Pass, as I was finally old enough to get one. Until the end of August they were only $10 for a lifetime of visiting any national park in the US. Sooo we couldn’t pass up that bargain! But this national park doesn’t cost to get in…only to park.

We walked around the national park and then watched the video explaining how it was built. Fabulous and so difficult to get it done. It took 14 years to build and was fraught with many obstacles along the way. And near the end of the project the main sculptor died and his son who had been working with him all along, finished it.  Mt Rushmore celebrated its 75th year last year in 2016. Here is a link with some interesting facts about it:https://matadornetwork.com/trips/75-surprising-facts-mount-rushmore/

We really enjoyed the monument and walking around…I even had some famous ice cream with the recipe from President Jefferson. Of course they sell it right there at the monument!

Then we drove on to Custer State Park. Learn more here:http://www.blackhillsbadlands.com/parks-monuments/custer-state-park

Kent had heard this was a great drive and also good for seeing lots of wildlife. Apparently they have a round up of their herd of buffalo once a year, we missed it by one week! Oh well! We did have an wonderful drive through beautiful scenery and saw lots of bison, some deer and antelope and lots of wild donkeys. We also took about a two mile hike through a forested area and then a meadow. It was up hill and down hill and we enjoyed it. I had to stop a few times to rest as the elevation was higher and I just haven’t quite fully recovered from my cancer surgery yet. But it was a great time!

At the end of the day we were in Keystone and found a nice place to eat a Bison steak! That was delicious and we met some interesting people. It is always kind of hard for us to answer the first question people ask you…”Where are you from.” So it often sparks more conversation because of our answer , “in a RV “. That wasn’t a full day.

So we had almost another whole day before we flew back to Seattle..so the next day we headed out to Sturgis, South Dakota. It is most known for the largest motorcycle rally in the world. Of course we had to check out the museum and local Harley Davidson store. So lots of pictures of that in this video.

We also had enough time to check out Fort Meade in South Dakota and drive around the area there too. I hope you enjoy our little trip to South Dakota. We did!
