Beach trip with my Friend, Melody

July 18, 2017

My new friend and our hostess for the summer, Melody loves the beach like me. One day we got talking about how we haven’t been to the beach enough. Melody admitted. That she had not been to a beach for years. So we started to think and plan… and last week our plans came to reality. Melody got us a hotel room and she drove… this little trip was to be a big part of her birthday present from her husband! Hah! Well, I was grateful to be accompanying her as I love the beach anytime, but especially in the summer.

We left their house in the tall evergreen trees and drove out to the Washington coast. We had a delightful drive, feeling a bit giddy with excitement. We had a nice lunch along the way and then drove in down to the coast. We found our hotel and checked in. We then went for a walk around the town to see the shops etc. we talked to shop owners and other locals and asked about good places for meals. We got two recommendations and went to both places while here. We rested a bit at the hotel and then went out to eat at a place called the Depot. I forgot to get pictures. But it was an old train depot and had a really good chef that had delicious food! We then drove to the beach and walked around a bit. It was quite windy and the sun was going down so after a while went back to our hotel room.

After a good sleep and breakfast we headed out to drive to the Oregon coast. We stopped to pick up a sandwhich to eat on the beach and saw some bargains, so we had to shop a little along the way. But we did arrive at Cannon Beach, Oregon and wow! We found a parking place within a short walk of the beach! How wonderful! I was so excited I almost ran down to the beach… the sand was soft and felt good on our feet…so we took a foot picture! Hah! Then we sat in the beach chairs that Melody had brought and read, talked and ate our lunch! Beautiful and restful! Finally I had to go to the bathroom so we left our chairs and then were able to come back a few minutes later and resume our restful time. Then it was time to leave…sad! “Sigh” oh well I hope to get more beach time again! Thanks Melody!

We then went back to hotel and rested and cleaned up and then went to the other recommendation which was called Gelattis. Sounded Italian and looked it online…we ordered Italian and ate Italian…but when the owner came out to mingle with the guests. he told us a different story. They had bought from an Italian but he wasn’t Italian. Still it was very good food! And he was interesting to talk to!

After another good nights sleep and breakfast we headed back but taking a somewhat different route. We took our time and stopped again for lunch and found some deer alongside the road. Eventually we stopped in Centralia that had a bunch of Antique stores. We got into a few but then we decided it was time to head home,

What a fun couple of days and a beach “fix” for both of us until the next time, Happy Birthday Melody! I had a great time! Thanks a ton for arranging and driving!

Bruce and Melody hosted a July 4th party

July 11, 2017

Our hosts( where we are parked this summer) are Bruce and Melody. They have graciously allowed us to park on their property with a beautiful view of Mt Rainier. They decided to host a party for Independence Day. We were graciously invited too.

We had a blast and the party was a huge success! Many of their neighbors, friends came. I think it must have been close to 60 people. Bruce plays in two bands and one of them played for the entertainment. I was able to get a short clip of them singing.

We had a fun day and enjoyed getting to know Bruce and Melody’s neighbors and friends better.

A special treat

July 10, 2017

We met Joan and Peter a few years ago when they hosted us in Portland for the Mission Connexion conference. Joan and I really hit it off right from the start and we had much in common. I have been wanting to do something for her as she has a hard life right now. Her husband Peter, 12 years ago fell and is now a handicapped man with a brain injury that makes him more like a child. Peter is very intelligent and has a PhD and was a chemical engineer before a brain tumor and then a fall off a ladder onto rocks, 12 years ago changed their lives forever!

Last year, Joan also nursed their one daughter until God took her to heaven.  She also had back surgery in March of this year! I felt God telling me to do something special with her to cheer her up. So between her challenges and then my cancer this spring, we both needed a special treat!

God gave that to us in the form of a mini vacation. Joan was able to get a caregiver for her husband Peter and then drove up to Seattle and met Kent and I at a place along the highway. Kent took Joan’s car and Joan and I took off in our little car. We drove to Seattle where I had booked an Airbnb for overnight as we had an early morning. We were there early enough so we went out for a nice meal at a local restaurant within walking distance. We also found a spot where we could see a nice sunset view of Seattle. Our host and hostess were wonderful and we enjoyed their home and them very much!

We were catching the Clipper ferry to Victoria, Canada. We had picked an excursion that included a 2 1/2 hour boat trip, a narrated bus ride around the city and the ride and entrance fee to a beautiful garden just outside of Victoria, called Butchart Gardens. We also had the ride back to Victoria and overnight accommodations at the Grand Hotel.

We had both been to the gardens before but we were excited to see what it looked like now, as they keep changing the flowers for the different times of the year! We saw many beautiful flowers and landscaping. It was breathtaking! Joan had known that we could eat in the gardens at the actual house of the Butchart family, as she had done it before. She treated us both to afternoon tea. We had such a great time and had delicious and beautiful food and very delicious teas!

We had met a young woman in the line for the boat. Natalie and us hung out at the gardens together and we three even rode a carrousel for fun! She left us when we went for tea but we saw her again on the ferry back to Seattle. It is fun to meet and get to know others on these excursions.

We then rode the bus back to Victoria where our luggage had been dropped at our hotel. Our hotel was the Grand Hotel, a 5 star hotel. Our room was beautiful and the hotel was so nice too. After a great night sleeping in very comfortable beds, we leisurely got up and decided we wanted to go to a special place for breakfast. Joan had been to this tea place called Murchie’s and knew they also served breakfast. Again delicious food and very delicious teas. They also sold teas, tea pots and cups and Joan loved their teas. So we spent about an hour for breakfast and then an hour picking our teas. We are still enjoying them. I also splurged and bought a beautiful tea cup to remember this wonderful time.

Our hotel concierge had agreed to keep our luggge until we were to board our Clipper ferry ride back to Seattle. So after breakfast and tea shopping we took our time and stopped in every little shop on Government street that took our fancy. This is a Main Street in this part of town. So there were shops of linens from Ireland, there were all kinds of souvenir shops and there was a little craft fair there too. The flower baskets were beautiful and were everywhere. We also stopped at delicious handmade chocolate store. Of course we did get a few for a treat. Joan got some for Peter as he loves them!

We had not known when we planned our trip, that Canada was about to celebrate their 150th year of being an independent country. So when we were in Victoria there were several events at the Harbor. We had a delicious Fish and chips meal at a great permanent food truck called Red Fish/Blue Fish. The line of people never seemed to go down although they served them as fast as the food could be cooked!

Because of this special celebration and which is leading up to Canada Day on July 1st, there was several live music groups playing as we ate our lunch. We had a delicious meal at a place called Dead Beets on Thursday late afternoon. It had burgers with red beets on them and also a delicious veggie burger with various veggie fries which I got. I could recommend both of these places as the food was very delicious.

As we walked around taking pictures of people, mimes, musicians, all of a sudden we heard some military music at the Parliament building. We rushed along with a crowd of people not wanting to miss some special event. We waited behind a rope cord with police enforcing no one could pass. We saw the band and two rows of military personnel standing at attention in front of this building, facing the building. So we waited for about a half hour, when some people came out of the building descended the stairs and got into some cars that had pulled up. Then everything started dispersing. We still didn’t know for sure what had happened, so as we were walking along two police officers were near us, so we asked them. They said it was the beginning of the legislative session. That was an interesting sideline for us to see.

It was a delightful time. The weather was beautiful and we were relaxed and God gave us such a wonderful time. When it was time to board the Clipper we retrieved our luggage and got on for the ride back to Seattle.

We arrived back in Seattle after a very peaceful ride and we were seeing the sunset as we arrived in Seattle. Beautiful! We retrieved our car and drove to where our RV house is parked. Our hosts Bruce and Melody have their beautiful guest house and they allowed Joan to stay there overnight. That was nice so she could be rested for her drive back to Portland on Friday. So we all slept well and then we had breakfast together and Joan drove back to Peter.

Here are some pictures but follow the video link to enjoy more!  It was a refreshing time for both of us and I believe God gave us this as a treat!
