Second Adventure with Silas

September 24, 2014

On the second day we decided to go by train to downtown Portland. Silas loves trains as most little boys do. So Kent had done some research and found that we could go by train, bus, tram, trolley car and then train again all on one ticket and for a very reasonable price. Silas was free and Kent was the senior rate. Only I was full adult fare. hah!

So here we are on the train:

Waiting to get on the tram. I think the tram was Silas’ favorite part of this adventure.

We sure were having fun! One more day and then Silas had to go back home to Michigan. Come back to see more fun!

First adventure with Silas

September 24, 2014

Kent and I had talked about and planned what we wanted to show Silas. We had talked about all the fun things but felt he would like several things better than other things. So our first day we went to Fort Vancouver. That was great fun!

Silas really enjoyed talking to the Blacksmith that was there making stuff.

Silas was willing to try at being a old timey clerk..Here he is in the outfit provided for that.

Of course no fort visit would complete without some Cannons and cannon balls.

Silas really liked the guard house at the corner of the palisade. We climbed up to the top to take a look at what the guards would have seen. Here is Silas looking out.

But a trip back in time isn’t complete without seeing what the bathroom were like then. Although Silas sat on one is was no longer a functioning one. Hah! He wanted Mommy and daddy to see what he was doing though so we sent this picture to them.

I really was with them but since I was taking the pictures..Silas and I posed for a selfie.. I need some more practise at getting these right…Hah!

As we went to leave…we actually got to see Mt Hood which stayed hidden for Josh and Teresa.

Our son and family came for a visit!!!

September 23, 2014

A few weeks ago we were so excited…we could hardly sleep! Yes, we were like little kids with our excitement to see our son Josh and his family again!!!  We love his wife Teresa and were so glad to see them so close to their 10th wedding anniversary too.

BUT our grandson Silas always steals the show!!!…He is 8 almost 9 years old now and so much fun!  He is full of questions and opinions and growing up WAY too FAST for grandma and grandpa! We had not seen them since Christmas…that is way too long!!!

We had only 4 days together. We took them to see the Oregon forest first. We had a nice couple of hours at the Tillamook Forest Center. They had some interpretive talks and they were especially fun for Silas as they were about woodpeckers and then beavers.  Then we had lunch and took a walk and looked all around the center which has lots of information about the forest and the 4 fires that destroyed the original forest. Then they also told us about the re-forestation and why the forest is there now. Amazing!  Check out this site for some pictures. http://www.millerhull.com/html/nonresidential/tillamook.htm

I wanted  a picture of just Josh and Teresa..as this was a few days after their 10th Wedding Anniversary.  Congratulations!

It was so pretty and  so peaceful. We all love the beautiful trees here in the Northwest. We went for some walks with the guides and found some Salmon berries. We were told it was ok to eat them so we did. Yum!

After our time in the forest  we went on to the Oregon coast. We did not try to cover lots of territory but instead  to enjoy seeing what we could. We stopped at several beaches as Silas, Teresa and I love the beach!

Teresa just enjoying the beach in spite of the wind.

Me, walking into the waves..but the water was a bit cold so I ran out of it pretty fast too.

At one beach stop Kent and Josh stayed on the shore and watched.

We also had stopped to see the Tillamook  Air Museum. It had been built as a blimp hangar so it is one of tallest wooden structures.  Here is a link to see more about them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tillamook_Air_Museum    They also had several different kinds of planes there. That made for a nice break in the drive too. Inside the hangar, below. Josh is checking out the one plane that yu could sit in.

Kent and Silas inspecting the “Guppy” plane. Pretty unusual and large. Built to carry NASA cargo. It is HUGE! Check out this site to learn more. http://gizmodo.com/this-super-sized-cargo-plane-carries-nasas-biggest-loa-1552891790

We had a great time exploring lots of things together. Here are some parting shots of the beach as I think that was the favorite. Silas at Cannon Beach, Oregon.

We had so much fun but the visit was short…so Josh and Teresa left us after 4 days and Silas stayed on for more fun with Grandpa and Grandma…So watch for that fun next!!

Reunion, relatives and relaxation

September 1, 2014

Two weekends ago Kent and I and Ken’s sister LeAnn and her husband Ken all flew to Grand Junction, Colorado for a first cousin reunion. The location was picked because one of Kent’s uncles lives there and his adult children are in that area. Uncle Marlo has a beautiful ranch house that allowed plenty of room for all of us to have dinners together. Here is their sign at the end of their road.

His sons, also first cousins own several hotels and gave us all a really good deal on our rooms. That made it really possible to come.

This is Kent’s dad’s side of the family. There were 44 of us all together for the weekend. Several of dad’s brothers and sisters were also there. So it was a fun to connect with many relatives all at the same place. Kent had one cousin come up and say that she had not seen him in 49 years… That was fun to get to know her better and her husband.

I think the fun thing was that we all had grown up kids now and so could concentrate on the adult conversations. We did hikes, other activities and walked around the town as our hotel is on the main street of Grand Junction.  It was tons of fun!!! and I am not even related to any of them except through marriage but I enjoyed them all too.

Another great gift to Kent and I was that Kara, our daughter and Nick her husband drove out from Denver for the event too. What a treat as we have not seen her since she became pregnant… So seeing her and Nick was a special gift!! She looks so good…check her out for yourself. It was so fun to hang out one day with Kara.
